Grant received: $12,500

The Sustainable Energy Teaching Initiatives Teaching Laboratory (SETIL) is an expansion of the Maryland Educational Solar Array (MESA) project into the area of wind based power generation.  The overall concept of the facility is to provide students with hands on experience in the design and use of alternative energy generation and utilization.  Project construction and installation was completed One commercially available design and two experimental designs for vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) were created. The experimental designs, one constructed from metal and one from wood, were built by affiliate organizations and UMD students. They are currently being tested. In addition to providing a unique educational experience for UMD students, the VAWTs will be included in an educational module used to teach area K-12 students about energy conservation.
