Creating a resource efficient campus is the primary focus of campus sustainability programs around the world. Waste of any sort (energy, water, food, chemicals, paper, etc.) depletes precious resources and costs institutions money. At the University of Maryland, efficiency and conservation programs are prime examples of the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility. The University strives to reduce its environmental footprint, minimize costs, and lead by example in the State and nation by creating an academic setting where students learn about sustainability by living it.
