Office of Sustainability Internships for Fall 2012

Current Openings

Education for Sustainability Research Intern

Description:  The Office of Sustainability seeks an intern to conduct research that supports the university’s objective to “educate all students for sustainability.”  The intern will support the Education for Sustainability Work Group of the University Sustainability Council and the Office of Sustainability by conducting interviews with faculty members and assembling a comprehensive list of sustainability-related courses at the university.  The interns will work under the supervision of Mark Stewart, Senior Project Manager in the Office of Sustainability. 

The intern will start work in early September 2012 and work an average of 10 hours per week through early-December 2012.

Qualifications:  The intern must be a current University of Maryland graduate student or undergraduate student with at least sophomore standing.  A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended.  The intern is expected to have a strong interest in sustainability, a professional work ethic, and a desire to make the campus more sustainable.  In addition, the intern must be comfortable interviewing professors about their work and taking notes during the interview.  Students in all majors are encouraged to apply. 

 
Green Office Education & Outreach Intern

Description:  The Office of Sustainability seeks an intern to support the implementation of the University of Maryland Green Office Program.  The Green Office program rewards and recognizes offices for taking steps to become more sustainable.  It engages staff, faculty and students in a voluntary, self-guided program that promotes green practices in an office environment.

The Green Office Education and Outreach Intern will support Green Offices in their implementation of the program.  Interns will conduct the Green Office audits, track audit data, provide consultation services to GO Reps and support the implementation of the program.  The Green Office Education and Outreach Intern will also conduct research, participate in Green Office Representative (GO Rep) training, support Green Office special events and assist with the development of new tools and strategies for implementation.  Interns will work under the supervision of the Sustainability Enhancement Coordinator who leads the Green Office Program.  In addition to the Green Office program, the intern will also assist with other Office of Sustainability education and outreach events that may include planning, programming and scheduling. 

It is expected that the Green Office Education and Outreach Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the Fall semester. 

Qualifications:  The Green Office Education and Outreach Intern must have strong communication skills, experience in education, and a strong interest in sustainability initiatives.  The intern should feel comfortable with public speaking, developing presentations and writing appropriately for the general public. 

 
Communications Intern

Description:  A Communications Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability’s online presence and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities include developing content for the campus sustainability website and newsletter (www.sustainability.umd.edu), such as documenting campus sustainability news and events through written summaries, photographing new projects and events, maintaining the Office of Sustainability’s Facebook and Twitter pages. The intern will also help the Office of Sustainability with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

The Communications Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the fall 2012 semester.

Qualifications:  The Communications Intern must be an excellent writer, able to summarize complex topics into succinct articles. Photography skills or an “artistic eye” preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with Dreamweaver, InDesign and Photoshop is a bonus.  Journalism and Communications students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered. 

 
Graphic Design Intern

Description:  A Graphic Design Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability’s on and off-campus identity and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities include developing graphics, layouts, fliers, logos, brochures and content for the campus sustainability website (www.sustainability.umd.edu), Office of Sustainability programs and initiatives and a campus sustainability tour. The intern will also help the Office of Sustainability with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

The Graphic Design Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout fall 2012.

Qualifications:  The Graphic Design Intern must have an excellent eye for art, able to coalesce complex topics into succinct graphic layouts. Photography skills preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver is a bonus.  Art and graphic design students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered. 

 

Illustration Intern

Description:  An illustration Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability’s on and off-campus identity and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities include illustrating images and diagrams for the Campus Sustainability Tour Signage, and various other projects related to SustainableUMD. The intern will also help the Office of Sustainability with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

The Web Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the fall 2012.

Qualifications:  The Illustration Intern must have an excellent eye for art, able to coalesce complex topics into succinct graphic layouts. Photography skills preferred to help the Office document campus events and projects. Familiarity with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is a bonus. Art and graphic design students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered. 

 

Web Intern

Description:  A Website Intern is needed to enhance the Office of Sustainability’s online presence and better promote campus sustainability efforts. Responsibilities include updating and maintaining layouts, organizing content and managing data for the campus sustainability website (www.sustainability.umd.edu). The intern will also help the Office of Sustainability with general outreach at campus events and perform other duties as assigned.

The Web Intern will work 10 hours per week throughout the fall 2012 semester. 

Qualifications:  The Web Programming Intern must be proficient with Adobe Dreamweaver and have an excellent eye for websites, able to coalesce complex topics into succinct web layouts. Familiarity with HTML, PHP, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop is a bonus. Computer science-related students are strongly encouraged to apply though students in all majors with the requisite skills will be considered. 

 

All Internships:

Prerequisites:  Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate student with at least sophomore standing.  A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended.  Interns are expected to have a strong interest in sustainability, a professional work ethic, and a desire to make the campus more sustainable.  In addition, interns must be disciplined and self-motivated as they will take the lead on their own projects. 

Internship Credit:  Academic credit is available for internships.  Students must talk with their academic advisor to see if internship credit is available through their academic department for this internship.  If credit is not available through the student’s home department, internship credit may be available though other departments.  Students must satisfy the specific internship requirements of the supporting academic department to earn credit, which typically involve 120 hours of work and a significant writing assignment, in addition to an Activities Log and a Letter of Evaluation from the on-site supervisor.  Students are responsible for covering the tuition-related implications of accepting the internship.  The Office of Sustainability cannot pay for course credits.
